What to Give Someone with Cancer

What to Give Someone with Cancer

When the unimaginable happens, it’s often difficult to know what to do or say and how to let someone know how much we care. When my friend found out that her teenage daughter had a very rare and inoperable brain tumor, I knew that I wanted her to feel the love from me since I couldn’t physically be with her.

I am fortunate to have a large group of childhood friends. We’ve known each other since we were very young, and we’ve been through all stages of life together. Grade school, middle school, high school, college, weddings, having babies, parent deaths, tragedies and everything in between. But this was a first. A heartbreaking diagnosis for a child. Even though most of us have experienced cancer firsthand with a loved one, this was the first for one of our kids. And other than prayer, I felt helpless.

We listened as she told us about driving hours every day to treatments and sitting with her daughter as she received hours of chemo. They were doing everything in their power to face this head-on. Their motto is #faithoverfear and they were an immediate example of not allowing cancer to take over their lives and to live each day with faith and purpose.

What to Give

Big Hug Lap Blanket

I have always loved the Because Love beautiful and soft Big Hug Lap blanket. I’ve given it to multiple people and it immediately came to mind as something we could give her. While my friend was not undergoing cancer treatment herself, I knew it would be something special that she could keep with her during these difficult times.

I sent tags to all of our childhood friends and to some of her family. I asked them to write an encouraging and loving note to her on the tag and then to send it to her individually. I sent her the blanket with my own tag and in the days and weeks to come, she received the loving messages from all of us and placed them on the blanket.

How it Helps

From that point on, she packed it with her every time they went to treatments. She felt our love by wrapping herself in the silky soft fabric and could read our encouraging messages any time she felt scared and alone. It was a simple and loving way to show her how much she is loved. Her daughter recently finished her last chemo treatment and we are grateful for her continued improvement in health.
